We Can Change the Direction Together
My life began in a big city. I was born and raised in Brooklyn NY. The struggles my family endured were real. To bring home a real homecooked meal was hard. The tears in their faces brought tears into mine. A city infected with drugs and murders; the odds were truly against me. The school I went to was no easier. I pushed myself to graduate in the 11th grade in order to survive the division, the struggle, and the reality that the odds were against me.
Today, I share a different story. I realized that my parents' struggles couldn't continue to be my struggles or my children's. I made a commitment to myself that if I strive to do better, my children will have a chance at a better life. If I reach for the stars, my children will be able to reach for the moon.
I am proud of what I have accomplished in the last 34 plus years. I really have been able to do it all. I have been in Leadership as president for one of the biggest auto clubs that provided to our community in 5 states. I have also been the manager for the same company for 21 years. President for two different little league baseball clubs, former vice president for the PRCP organization in Allentown, Executive Board member for Star Community Health, and Board Member for Parknership. I ran for office in the city I call home, Allentown, twice already and yes, with bare minimum financial help.
I do these things not just for me because I have already done what I need to do for myself. What I do now is for my children and the children of OUR community. I feel that they should not have to struggle and endure what I endured.
I strongly believe that I have, so far, successfully achieved my goals. I have two children that graduated college. My oldest son is in the military. My 9-year-old has experienced everything you can think of between education and sports. My children understand that being a middle-class family is a struggle that we will get through together.
I firmly believe that I am a great candidate for the community because I am just like you. I struggle on a daily basis to make a difference at-home. I work paycheck to paycheck as most of us do in the community. Health insurance is one of my biggest expenses followed by groceries. I was very lucky to purchase my home here in Allentown 23 years ago and I say lucky because seeing the cost of rent is extremely outrageous. How can anyone afford that? Why haven't we invested back in the same people that kept Allentown alive for so long? Why do we continue to forget how Allentown came about? Why?
We need to invest back to OUR citizens, OUR communities, OUR city. This city is not just for the top 1 percent, but for all to love and enjoy.
We need to invest back in our parks. A crucial part of our system. Our youth need better recreational centers. Let's invest back in our youth's future. Let's keep children out of the street corners. Let's be the role models and give them the tools they need to achieve their goals. Our youth are the future of this community.
We need to invest in affordable homes. Every election I hear candidates running with this topic. It's time to stop talking the talk and walk the walk. It is time for ACTION ahead instead of REACTION later.
We need to continue to invest in our police department. We need to invest in a state-of-the-art building that will lead to more training, more cameras, more of working with them instead of against them. Living in this community I definitely understand that we have had some bad apples, but what we do with those bad apples should not cause a domino effect with the good apples. Investment for the betterment of our children's future is key, and we achieve that by working TOGETHER.
We need to invest in those non-profit organizations that really affect our city in a positive way. These investments need to make sense not give you more voters.
We need to commit to the entire city not just certain parts of it. We need to invest in our roads. We need to invest in 1st responders. We cannot forget our fire department, like our brothers in blue, make a big part of our city. These firefighters need newer equipment and upgrades in their stations. We cannot allow our buildings to deteriorate and then start looking for a solution. We need to inspect these buildings for our citizens because you deserve it.
I will run for office for our citizens. All of our citizens. I will listen to your concerns, and I will address them to the best of my ability. I will not allow anything to move forward without hearing your concerns and suggestions.
The difference starts NOW. Let's work TOGETHER. I am not asking you to judge me by the promises of others. All I am asking is to trust in me as I would trust in you. Vote Luis Acevedo for your next Allentown City Council. TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Podemos Cambiar La Direccion Juntos
Mi vida comenzó en una gran ciudad. Nací y crecí en Brooklyn NY. Las luchas que soportó mi familia fueron reales. Llevar a casa una verdadera comida casera fue difícil. Las lágrimas en sus rostros trajeron lágrimas a las mías. Una ciudad infectada de drogas y asesinatos; las probabilidades estaban realmente en mi contra. La escuela a la que fui no fue más fácil. Me esforcé por graduarme en el undécimo grado para sobrevivir a la división, la lucha y la realidad de que las probabilidades estaban en mi contra.
Hoy les comparto una historia diferente. Me di cuenta de que las luchas de mis padres no podían seguir siendo mis luchas ni las de mis hijos. Me comprometí conmigo mismo a que si me esforzaba por hacerlo mejor, mis hijos tendrían la oportunidad de tener una vida mejor. Si alcanzo las estrellas, mis hijos podrán alcanzar la luna.
Estoy orgulloso de lo que he logrado en los últimos 34 años. Realmente he podido hacerlo todo. He estado en el liderazgo como presidente de uno de los clubes de automóviles más grandes que brindó servicios a nuestra comunidad en 5 estados. También he sido el gerente de la misma empresa durante 21 años. Presidente de dos clubes de béisbol de ligas menores diferentes, ex vicepresidente de la organización PRCP en Allentown, miembro de la Junta Ejecutiva de Star Community Health y miembro de la Junta de Parknership. Ya me postulé para un cargo en la ciudad que llamo mi hogar, Allentown, dos veces y sí, con la mínima ayuda financiera.
Hago estas cosas no solo por mí porque ya he hecho lo que tenía que hacer por mí mismo. Lo que hago ahora es por mis hijos y los niños de NUESTRA comunidad. Siento que ellos no deberían tener que luchar y soportar lo que yo soporté.
Creo firmemente que, hasta ahora, he logrado con éxito mis objetivos. Tengo dos hijos que se graduaron de la universidad. Mi hijo mayor está en el ejército. Mi hijo de 9 años ha experimentado todo lo que se pueda imaginar, desde educación hasta deportes. Mis hijos entienden que ser una familia de clase media es una lucha que superaremos juntos.
Creo firmemente que soy un gran candidato para la comunidad porque soy como tú. Lucho a diario para marcar una diferencia en casa. Trabajo de sueldo a sueldo como la mayoría de nosotros en la comunidad. El seguro médico es uno de mis mayores gastos, seguido de la comida. Tuve mucha suerte de comprar mi casa aquí en Allentown hace 23 años y digo suerte porque ver el costo del alquiler es extremadamente escandaloso. ¿Cómo puede alguien pagar eso? ¿Por qué no hemos invertido de nuevo en las mismas personas que mantuvieron viva a Allentown durante tanto tiempo? ¿Por qué seguimos olvidando cómo surgió Allentown? ¿Por qué?
Necesitamos invertir de nuevo en NUESTROS ciudadanos, NUESTRAS comunidades, NUESTRA ciudad. Esta ciudad no es solo para el 1 por ciento más rico, sino para que todos la amen y disfruten.
Necesitamos invertir de nuevo en nuestros parques. Una parte crucial de nuestro sistema. Nuestros jóvenes necesitan mejores centros recreativos. Invirtamos en el futuro de nuestros jóvenes. Mantengamos a los niños fuera de las esquinas de las calles. Seamos modelos a seguir y démosles las herramientas que necesitan para alcanzar sus metas. Nuestros jóvenes son el futuro de esta comunidad.
Necesitamos invertir en viviendas asequibles. En cada elección escucho a los candidatos que se presentan con este tema. Es hora de dejar de hablar y poner en práctica lo que predican. Es hora de ACTUAR en lugar de REACCIONAR después.
Necesitamos seguir invirtiendo en nuestro departamento de policía. Necesitamos invertir en un edificio de última generación que conduzca a más capacitación, más cámaras, más trabajo con ellos en lugar de contra ellos. Viviendo en esta comunidad, definitivamente entiendo que hemos tenido algunas manzanas podridas, pero lo que hagamos con ellas no debe causar un efecto dominó con las buenas. La inversión para mejorar el futuro de nuestros niños es clave, y lo logramos trabajando JUNTOS.
Necesitamos invertir en aquellas organizaciones sin fines de lucro que realmente afectan a nuestra ciudad de manera positiva. Estas inversiones deben tener sentido, no darle más votantes.
Necesitamos comprometernos con toda la ciudad, no solo con ciertas partes de ella. Necesitamos invertir en nuestras carreteras. Necesitamos invertir en los servicios de emergencia. No podemos olvidarnos de nuestro departamento de bomberos, que al igual que nuestros hermanos de azul, es una gran parte de nuestra ciudad. Estos bomberos necesitan equipos más nuevos y mejoras en sus estaciones. No podemos permitir que nuestros edificios
Deteriorarse y luego empezar a buscar una solución. Necesitamos inspeccionar estos edificios para nuestros ciudadanos porque ustedes se lo merecen.
Me postularé para el cargo por nuestros ciudadanos. Todos nuestros ciudadanos. Escucharé sus inquietudes y las abordaré lo mejor que pueda. No permitiré que nada avance sin escuchar sus inquietudes y sugerencias.
La diferencia comienza AHORA. Trabajemos JUNTOS. No les pido que me juzguen por las promesas de otros.
Todo lo que les pido es que confíen en mí como yo confiaría en ustedes.
